Veneers and crowns can both change a smile, but they do not solve the same problem and they do not remove the same amount of tooth structure. If a quote says “20 veneers” while the photographs show teeth prepared all the way around, stop and ask for the exact restoration name tooth by tooth.

NHS treatment information describes a crown as a cap that completely covers a real tooth and a veneer as a new facing for the front of a tooth. Those definitions are a useful defence against package labels that blur the two.
When a veneer may be considered
A clinician may discuss veneers when the aim is to alter the colour, shape, length, spacing or symmetry of visible teeth and enough healthy, suitably positioned tooth structure remains. Good bonding conditions, gum health, enamel availability and the bite matter. Bruxism, severe crowding, active disease or very large fillings can change the recommendation.

When a crown may be considered
A crown may be used when a tooth has lost substantial structure, contains a large restoration, is fractured, has been root-treated or needs broader protection and reshaping. NHS Digital guidance describes crowns as full-coverage restorations used where insufficient tooth tissue remains to restore otherwise.

The “Turkey Teeth” language problem
Online, “Turkey Teeth” can refer to veneers, crowns or a mixture. The phrase describes a look or travel trend, not a clinical procedure. A patient may believe they bought thin veneers while the clinic planned full-coverage crowns. Avoid that gap by requiring an itemised chart before consenting.
Ask for a tooth-by-tooth plan
Your written plan should state, for every tooth:
- the tooth number;
- the diagnosis or cosmetic objective;
- veneer, crown, bonding, whitening, orthodontics or no treatment;
- material and manufacturer where relevant;
- preparation design and whether a temporary restoration is needed;
- fees, laboratory stages and expected review schedule.
If the answer is simply “20-unit smile package,” you still do not know what is happening to your teeth.
Alternatives worth discussing first
Whitening
For colour alone, professional whitening may avoid drilling healthy tooth structure. Existing crowns and veneers will not whiten in the same way, so sequence matters.
Orthodontics or clear aligners
Moving teeth can address crowding, rotation and spacing instead of disguising position with thicker or more aggressive restorations. It takes longer, but time is a different trade-off from irreversible preparation.

Bonding can alter selected edges, shapes or gaps with a repairable material. It may stain or wear sooner than ceramic and is not right for every bite, but it belongs in the alternatives discussion.
Fewer restorations
A smile design does not automatically require 20 treated teeth. Ask which teeth show when you speak and smile, and why each proposed unit is necessary.
How to compare Turkey quotes fairly
