Neither Turkey nor Hungary is the better place for dental implants for everyone. Hungary suits patients who want a shorter flight and the legal framework of an EU member state; Turkey suits patients who are happy with a longer flight and want a coastal or Istanbul stay. In both countries, implants usually need two trips, and in both you should check the clinic and the dentist against an official register before paying anything.

We list dental clinics in Turkey, not Hungary, so read this knowing that.

Quick answer. Choose on fit, not on headline price. Hungary may suit you if you are insured in the EU (for example in Ireland), or want a short flight and a Budapest city break. Turkey may suit you if you want a beach resort or Istanbul and have checked the clinic against the Ministry of Health list. For UK residents, Hungary’s EU membership does not mean NHS funding or GHIC cover for private implants. In both countries, plan two trips and arrange a dentist at home for aftercare.

Price: what we can and cannot compare

We have not found a dated, primary source for Hungarian implant prices, such as official statistics, and a single clinic’s price list is not a market price. So this guide does not claim that either country is cheaper. For Turkey, these are the planning ranges we use across GetClinicTurkey for 2026; your written quote is what counts.

Treatment in Turkey Planning range (EUR) Unit
Single dental implant €350–800 Per implant
Zirconia crown €150–300 Per tooth
All-on-4 €2,500–4,500 Per jaw
All-on-6 €3,200–5,500 Per jaw

To compare fairly, ask clinics in both countries for a written, tooth-by-tooth plan that prices the implant, abutment, crown, scans and any grafting as separate lines, plus the number of visits. Our Dental Cost Index shows how published quotes differ in scope, and the dental implants in Turkey guide covers what a full implant quote should include.

Getting there and how long you stay

Distance. Budapest is closer. In a straight line between airports, London Heathrow is about 1,500 km from Budapest, about 2,500 km from Istanbul and 2,800–2,900 km from Dalaman and Antalya. From Dublin, Budapest is about 1,900 km and Istanbul about 2,900 km.

Entry. British citizens can visit the Schengen area, which includes Hungary, without a visa for up to 90 days in any 180-day period (FCDO). Turkey allows British visitors up to 90 days in any 180 days, and your passport must be valid for at least 150 days after you arrive (FCDO).

Number of trips. The country does not change how bone heals. Most implant cases involve one visit to place the implant and a second, months later, for the final crown or bridge. Read one trip or two for implants before you book flights.

EU membership: what it changes and what it does not

Hungary has been an EU member state since 1 May 2004 and in the Schengen area since December 2007. It uses the forint, not the euro (European Union). Turkey is not in the EU. That difference matters differently for UK and Irish residents.

The EU cross-border healthcare directive

Directive 2011/24/EU sets patients’ rights for cross-border healthcare inside the EU (EUR-Lex). Under Article 4, the country of treatment must ensure that providers give clear information on prices, registration status and liability cover; that complaints procedures and professional liability insurance (or an equivalent) are in place; and that patients get a record of their treatment. Article 5 says that, where follow-up is needed, the patient’s home country must offer the same follow-up as if the treatment had been given there. Article 6 requires national contact points that can give information on a specific provider’s right to provide services.

In Hungary, the contact point tasks are carried out by the Integrated Legal Protection Service (Hungarian National Contact Point). Patients’ rights are set out in Act CLIV of 1997 on health (NCP).

If you live in Ireland

Irish residents can use the HSE Cross Border Directive scheme for treatment in another EU or EEA country, including Hungary but not Turkey. You can only have the same treatment that is available to public patients in Ireland (HSE). The scheme repays the lower of the cost abroad and the cost in the Irish public system, and does not cover travel or accommodation (HSE). Ask the HSE whether your implant treatment qualifies before you rely on a refund. Separately, Irish taxpayers can usually claim tax relief on non-routine dental treatment abroad; see Irish tax relief on dental treatment in Turkey.

If you live in the UK

The NHS says that now the UK has left the EU, the EU Directive route has ended, apart from some legacy cases (NHS). The S2 route does not cover private treatment (NHS). A GHIC or EHIC does not cover going abroad for any planned treatment (GOV.UK), and the EHIC does not cover private healthcare (European Commission). So for a UK patient paying privately, Hungary’s EU membership brings no public funding.

Turkey: the national framework

Turkey regulates international patients through its Regulation on International Health Tourism and Tourist Health (Official Gazette No. 32882). Article 5 requires health facilities to hold a Ministry of Health authorisation certificate to treat international patients. Article 6(3) makes the facility and any intermediary responsible for their services, including complications and malpractice that appear after treatment. Our guide to travel insurance for dental treatment in Turkey explains the clinic’s complication insurance duty. Turkey is not on the NHS list of countries where a UK GHIC can be used (NHS).

Guarantees and aftercare

Implant guarantees in both countries are commercial terms set by each clinic, not legal rights. Ask whether a guarantee covers only repair work at the clinic or also flights and accommodation, and get the terms in writing. Our guide to dental guarantees and aftercare lists what to check.

If something goes wrong, the UK Foreign Office cannot usually help: GOV.UK says planned medical treatment is considered a commercial arrangement (GOV.UK). In Hungary, the Directive requires complaints procedures and remedies under Hungarian law, and the national contact point can explain them. In Turkey, the regulation places responsibility for later complications on the facility.

Either way, agree before you travel that a dentist at home will see you for check-ups and problems, and bring home your treatment record, X-rays and implant system details. Irish patients treated in Hungary also have the Directive’s follow-up rule (Article 5); UK patients do not.

Which country suits whom

Your situation Points towards Why
Insured in Ireland, hoping for a public refund Hungary (check eligibility first) The HSE scheme covers EU and EEA countries, not Turkey
Shortest flight and a city break Hungary Budapest is closer to the UK and Ireland
Recovering somewhere by the sea Turkey Aegean and Mediterranean resorts; Hungary has no coast
UK resident paying privately Either No NHS funding or GHIC cover in either; compare clinics, plans and aftercare
Complex medical history or no aftercare at home Usually neither Continuity of care is easier close to home

The bottom line

Turkey or Hungary for dental implants? Pick the country whose trip, rules and aftercare fit you, then pick the clinic on evidence, not on claims that one country’s dentists are better. Hungary’s EU membership matters most to patients insured in the EU. In either country, check the clinic’s licence and the dentist’s registration, plan two trips and arrange aftercare at home.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Turkey or Hungary better for dental implants?

Neither is better for everyone. Hungary is a shorter flight from the UK and Ireland and an EU member state, which matters most to patients insured in the EU. Turkey suits patients who want a coastal or Istanbul stay. In both, an implant usually needs to heal before the final crown, so plan two trips and aftercare at home.

Is Hungary cheaper than Turkey for dental implants?

We cannot say. We have no verified, dated set of Hungarian implant prices, so we make no price comparison between the two countries. Our planning range for a single implant in Turkey is €350–800 per implant. To compare, get written, itemised quotes from clinics in both countries that list the implant, abutment, crown, scans and any grafting separately.

Does my GHIC or EHIC cover dental implants in Hungary?

No. The UK government says a GHIC or EHIC does not cover going abroad for elective surgery or any planned treatment, and the European Commission says the EHIC does not cover private healthcare or travel for the express purpose of obtaining medical treatment. GHIC and EHIC are not valid in Turkey at all.

Can Irish patients claim money back for dental treatment in Hungary?

Possibly, through the HSE Cross Border Directive scheme, which covers EU and EEA countries but not Turkey. It only covers treatment that is available to public patients in Ireland, it repays the lower of the cost abroad and the cost in the Irish public system, and it does not cover travel. Check with the HSE before booking.

How do I check a dentist in Hungary or Turkey?

In Hungary, search the dentist’s name in the public register run by the Országos Kórházi Főigazgatóság (OKFŐ) and ask the clinic for its operating licence. In Turkey, check the clinic against the Ministry of Health list of authorised health facilities, and ask for the treating dentist’s full name and the regional dental chamber they are registered with.
